Fourth Graders at Mountain View Engage in STEM Design Process Challenge Sponsored by Sticker Giant

This fall, Longmont based company, Sticker Giant was the sponsor of a STEM project at Mountain View Elementary in which fourth grade students engaged in a design process challenge to promote growth mindset to all students at Mountain View by creating a custom sticker.

Learning Technology Coach, Courtney Groskin, emphasized “It’s very important for Mountain View students to have real-life connections to their design challenges.” Math, science, and art standards were incorporated throughout the project which was launched with a visit from one of Sticker Giant’s graphic designers who presented on career readiness and design best practices.

Students then had two weeks to ideate and prototype designs which they presented to representatives from St. Vrain Valley Schools and Sticker Giant. After having the opportunity to make adjustments to their designs, the fourth graders submitted their final proposals to Sticker Giant who voted using a design rubric.
One sticker from each fourth grade class was selected to be produced into a real sticker. Sticker Giant joined Mountain View at a school assembly in December to share video footage of the two selected sticker designs in production. The printed stickers were distributed to the students.

According to People and Culture Director at Sticker Giant, Betsy Holmes, “Students were given a very challenging, conceptual assignment. They are tackling a design challenge that somebody would have today as a full time graphic designer.

Principal Jennifer Piccone remarked on the success of the partnership, “Providing opportunities for our students to have exposure to highly engaging learning opportunities connected to our community partners has been incredible for our students. Working in collaboration with each other and industry experts helped students grow academically, socially, and emotionally through the design process.”
